A Fresh Look

Our homes are a statement to the world about what is important to us. Why not take a fresh look at your home today and see what it reflects.

Sometimes it is easy to feel we have nothing to say about the way our home looks, especially when we live such lives in unusual places. In some cases we stay in staff housing and feel like we have precious few ways to make it our own. Instead of reflecting what we feel is important, our home may be suffering from indifference. Even worse, we may never allow ourselves to feel at home in our home. Change is just too much trouble and might not be worth the effort. Sure, it’s clean, maybe even tidy, but it feels a little stale.

TCK: Masterpiece or Mess?

While we are parenting our children in a cross cultural setting, it is difficult to know whether we are doing it right or not. One of our best sources of information about how living outside our home culture affects our children is hearing from adult children of PWs. Kim Holland recently shared some insights about her cross cultural experience. She is writing more and will from time-to-time share more with Peter’s Wife. Kim was a TCK(Third Culture Kid). She grew up in Argentina and currently works as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Lawton, OK, USA.

An Inheritance

When I was a young woman, I imagined my life would include a husband, two or three girls, a suburban home, and a white picket fence. When I married my husband, I amended that to having a pastor as a husband, a couple girls, and a series of parsonages throughout our lifetime. By the time our second son was born, I knew I wouldn’t have the girls or the series of parsonages. We had already lived in eight homes and none of them were the traditional parsonage.

During our marriage, we have lived in a total of 21 homes on three continents. Our pastoring expanded from one small congregation to serving in many churches. We’ve stayed in many homes, hotels, and guesthouses.

When Parents Need Help

Elizabeth and her husband, George,  intended to spend the next twenty years overseas when they left their home country. They have served overseas for five years. They love their work, and with three small children they have their hands full. After an email and follow-up phone call they are having to re-evaluate their plans. Elizabeth’s father has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. His job is threatened, but for now her mom can continue to support the family.

Sally and Ben are long-timers overseas. They raised their children on the field, and as empty-nesters, they now look forward to some years with fewer family responsibilities. That changed suddenly when Ben’s mother fell and broke her hip. His mother has been a widow living on her on for a few years. What are they to do?

Why talk about aging parents with those who are living and working overseas? Because either now, or in the future, you may have to help care for your own elderly relatives, and that will influence what you can and cannot do overseas.

Belongings

Once again it’s time for a major change. For the last 13 years we have been living in the US and spending four months each year in SE Asia. It has been getting clearer and clearer that we are to switch that pattern. We will live in SE Asia and spend three to four months each year in the US.

This means our selling our house. The hardest part of this change for me was giving up this house. I have enjoyed it so much. It is a nice home, full of great memories. We have lived in it longer than anywhere we have ever lived.
