What Would Mary Say?

For many years now we have heard the beautiful Christmas song, “Mary, Did You Know?” It is so poignant. Mark Lowry really stirred our imagination with those lyrics. It touches our hearts with the questions it asks, and causes us to stand in amazement at the power of our God. Of course Mary had no idea what her baby would do, but she trusted the word of God spoken to her by an angel. She willingly surrendered her all.

Recently, my husband spoke about some things Mary might like to tell us. Like Mark Lowry, he used his imagination, picturing Mary, after all she experienced, giving wise counsel to us. She is unique, but all who follow Christ can learn from her experience.

As cross cultural workers, we know a lot about surrender. We’ve surrendered a normal life in our home country. We’ve surrendered time with our loved ones at home. We may have left houses and land and parents and children. And like Jesus promised in Luke 10:30, we’ve received a hundredfold now and in eternity.

But everyone of us has passed through storms of opposition from outside ourselves, and doubts that arise from our own hearts. So think about what Mary might like to say to you this Christmas.

Joy!

Isn’t that one of the themes of the Christmas season?

“Joy to the world!”

“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people!”

So, where do we find that joy? Many of our readers know the answer to that question in a very deep and personal way. Even so, Christmas is a great time to remember where real joy has its source.

Sue Eenigenburg in More Screams, Different Deserts, wrote a chapter called ‘Joy in His Presence.’ I’m including part of that chapter (with Sue’s permission). She did a great job of putting words to some of my recent thoughts.

Sue bases her musings on Luke 10:38-42. Jesus is visiting one of his favorite places, the home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. As we well know, Martha had worry issues, and some irritability with her sister, too. Here’s Sue:

Mary knew that true joy in life was not found in her accomplishments or activities, but in her relationship with Jesus Christ. She would not allow herself to be distracted from her relationship with the Lord by things to do.

Worth the Wait

Have you been disappointed by promised not kept ? Were you shocked by the senseless massacre of innocent children and their teachers in Newtown, Conn.? Are you frustrated by seeing religiosity instead genuine spirituality?

Does it seem that you have been slogging along for a very long time without much to show for your life? With the minimal results you’ve seen this year, what can you tell your supporters so they will to continue your support in 2013?

You are not alone. There are many other women throughout the world who wonder if they will ever see an answers to their most ardent prayers. We may not talk about it, but most of us live with a mixture of hope and questions.

Mine to Give Away

He was a special baby, this darling little boy sleeping so peacefully in his mother’s arms. He was a baby born to die . . . born to die the death of a criminal, though he would never commit a crime, never tell a lie, never even think an evil thought. Yet he was destined for such a death before he was born.

What does his mother think as she holds him, so close to her heart? How much does she know? The angel said this child he would be great, that he would be called the Son of the Most, High, God!

She was a young virgin eagerly awaiting her marriage to a nice man named Joseph. Then the angel spoke to her: “God has chosen you, Mary! You will become pregnant by the Spirit of God and you will give birth to a son, a son who you will call Yeshua, Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.”

The Gift Exchange

by Mike Constantine

Christmas season is a time we set aside for giving and receiving gifts in celebration of the greatest gift ever given, the Lord Jesus. But it would be a sad thing to give a costly gift and then find out that it was never used or enjoyed.

Imagine your own personal gift exchange with Jesus. Think about Jesus sitting down with you to exchange gifts. Think what it would be like for Him to give you precious things and how you would feel after you had received them. Since we can’t receive anything from Him until we first give Him something, let’s begin our imaginary scene with you giving a gift to Jesus.
