Snowmen Melt, God Abides

This Christmas season, Mike and I have the joy of being with our family and friends in America. Our family members are all well, and for that we are grateful. We pray it will always be so.

We have many friends here, however, who are going through severe trials. One is fighting breast cancer; another has a daughter who is in treatment for a serious addiction. Other friends have a grown daughter having headaches so severe that they make her (and her parents) cry. The headaches have lasted for months. They came following surgery for a tumor on the otic nerve, the nerve that controls hearing. Compared to these headaches, they tell us, a migraine is unremarkable.

The Fragrance of Incense

In the country where we live, incense is burned everywhere, everyday. There is no way to avoid it. Those of us who live in places like this understand the powerful imagery of incense. Look at Second Corinthians, chapter two, verses 14-16. Paul says we are spreading the knowledge of our Lord like a sweet fragrance of incense. Where incense is burning, no one can ignore it. It either draws people toward its source, or repels them. The incense of our lives is spreading among those who are being saved and among those who are being lost.

In the first chapter of Malachi, verse 11 there is a promise that is particularly powerful for those of us who are living in other cultures. It says that from the rising to the setting of the sun, in every place, incense and pure offerings will be brought in His name. His name will be great among the nations. Every day it is happening. In some new place, a new life is offering up new praise to Him. You have a part to play in this drama of the ages. What joy to spread this fragrance! [Read more…]

The Vitality Assessment

Let’s take a moment to think about Elijah, the mighty prophet of God. He had just participated in what sports announcers would call a rout! The false God, Baal, was no match for the Living God, Yahweh. As God’s chosen representative, Elijah was overpowering. After that victory, he should have been so up, but he was so down. When threatened by Jezebel, he ran like a scared rabbit. He even left his close companion behind, found a convenient tree, fell to the ground, and asked God to let him die.

You may hesitate to compare yourself to Elijah. I would. But the Bible says he was a man with the same experience that all of us have. In other words, completely human. Working cross culturally, we see victories that we can never fully describe to those back home. Then something happens that threatens us (it doesn’t even have to be a very big something) and we cave in.

God’s Flawed Friends

Serving in a culture other than our own seems to bring out the worst in us at times. The question of whether God can still use us with all our flaws and foibles can flood our minds in times like these.

Mike Constantine shares God’s Flawed Friends to encourage you where you are today. [Read more…]
