Loneliness

Dorothy said she married a young, enthusiastic man in her hometown. They were surrounded by friends, family, and other believers. She was sheltered and secure. Bill began a successful career as a minister. First with several hundred then later with a 2,000 member congregation. After their first son was born, she became lonely as she saw less and less of Bill.

Dorothy tells her story:

I felt as if I had to make an appointment to see my own husband. I was discouraged and frustrated. Home was not home without Bill. I desperately wanted time with him, unpressured time that was not cut short by the demands his work. I wanted to know that my needs, and the baby’s, were at least as important to Bill as the needs of others. Most of the time, it didn’t seem that way.

Seeing Others

teen-boy-purple-mohawk500Working in cross cultural situations gives us a unique opportunity to see other people. But sometimes we see through filters we are not even aware of. How we see others affects the way we respond to them. And therein lies the importance of clear vision.

Many of us wear glasses to improve our vision, and also wear much thicker lens on the eyes of our heart. We see through the lenses of stereotypes, misconceptions, fear and pride. These lenses were fitted to our hearts from childhood and have become so comfortable we don’t even know we are wearing them.

One day sitting at a traffic light, a really strange person crossed in front of my car. He had dyed hair in a radical style, huge jeans and chains and spikes across his chest. I instantly judged him a troublemaker and profoundly disturbed. Just as he passed in front of my car, he glanced up at me and our eyes locked. Tears began to pour down my face as I realized this was some mother’s son. How her heart must grieve for this son of hers. God changed my sight by touching my heart.

For this newsletter, we will excerpt from the letters those parts that seem to apply to a large audience. But when you have time or want to see comments on specific aspects of change, go to our website. You’ll find the link at the end of this newsletter. [Read more…]

When Change Means a New Place

From Dinah
I too traveled or moved a lot even before I got married to a wonderful man from America and became a PW here in Brazil.

I guess the most scary part to me was when I traveled to a giant country called the U.S.A. to visit my sister. I had traveled a lot around the Philippines and Thailand and Indonesia with our volleyball team. Travel was fun until I realized I would be traveling alone in the U.S.A. But I know God was with me, so it wasn’t that bad.

Season of Change

This is a season of change for my husband and me. Recently we were thinking about how many things have changed for us in the last few months.

The first change is into a wider sphere of influence. My husband and I have been overseas teaching for the last six weeks. For several years my husband has been offering me more opportunities to speak on these trips, but I preferred to be behind the scenes. This time I stepped out and taught on some subjects I’m particularly passionate about. From one of those sessions, I have been given the opportunity to write a series of articles for a local English language newspaper. It is a season of change that is bringing many new opportunities for touching others.
