TCK Friendships

As you may know, our two sons grew up, for more than half their childhood years, outside their home country. That makes them Third Culture Kids, or TCKs. Recently I have been thinking about how our sons react to their world. I wondered how much their experience as Third Culture Kids actually affects them today, now that they are adults. I was especially interested in how TCKs make friends, and how their experience differs from others in that area.

For a refresher, I looked at David Pollock and Ruth Van Reken’s  textbook called, Third Culture Kids. The chapter on Relational Patterns  discusses  how Third Culture Kids (TCKs) make friendships and how that affects them later in life.

Blah!

Did you ever have one of those days? You know. The days when nothing excites you, nothing stimulates you, and you feel slightly like day old bread? In the rhythms of life we are bound to have days like that, even if we are mighty women of God, serving the unreached and the needy. Some days just refuse to shine, no matter how much we buff them with prayer and embellish them with praise.

You try everything. You pick up your Bible, either electronically or in the good old fashioned way. You look for a spark- something to ignite the fire you do not feel. Blah. [Read more…]

Surprised by Love

Do you like surprises? Depends on what they are, right? Living and working outside our own culture we often experience surprises. Some delight us and some shock us.

Some of my most pleasant surprises come in the form of people, often strangers, who become living, practical expressions of God’s love. In this Peter’s Wife I want to share some of those with you. I hope that as you read them, you’ll recall some loving surprises of your own, and maybe even share them with the PW community.

The Tiny Things!

Last Friday I tripped on my way to lunch at our favorite Indian restaurant. For no apparent reason, there I was sprawled on the sidewalk with a very sore right hand.

So here I am a few days later tapping out this post on my iPod. Oh how much this tiny broken bone has affected. I’m learning to eat with my left hand. Brush my hair with my left hand and even stranger, brush my teeth with my left hand. This is such a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things. But . . .

It has made me so thankful for what wasn’t hurt and for what cannot be taken from me. It has made me even more grateful for letting us serve among so gracious and thoughtful people. It made me so thankful for such rapid communication to ask for prayer and receive such lovely notes of concern.

The wrinkled and lame old woman who sits around our local coffee shop called me over to ask about my bandaged arm. I didn’t even know before this that she spoke English. She is one I’ve always caught her eye and smiled at, but because of this tiny bone, I’ll stop and talk to also.

What are some tiny things you can be thankful for today?

Most Dangerous Times

Do you know your dangerous times? Everybody has them. Moreover,  if we live and work outside our home culture, we face special dangers. Parents and friends feel concerned for our health and safety. That’s a good thing. Like the Randy Newman song, says, “It’s a Jungle Out There.” It is great to know that people who love us pray for us. Who knows where we would be if they didn’t.

Sometimes the dangers become more acute, more threatening.  Recently I received an email from a PW asking for prayer because her host country is about to crumble. General strikes, mobs, rioting- turmoil everywhere.
