Peter’s Wife was conceived in a living room in Denver, Colorado, USA in 1986. Four or five women gathered to talk and share and encourage each other. We were on home leave from different organizations and we were surprised by how many things we had in common though we had served on several different continents. We began to talk about sharing a newsletter among ourselves and with a few other women we knew who were working cross culturally. We came up with an address list of about 10.

For ten years, Peter’s Wife was printed and mailed monthly. By that time the list had grown to over 600 women in all corners of the world. The printing and postage became overwhelming and so Peter’s Wife stopped for a few years.

In 2000, Peter’s Wife was resurrected as a monthly email. Again it started with only a handful of names and now goes to over 700 women every month. By 2001, I built our first web site to archive all the letters that were sent out.

You may be wondering why we named it Peter’s Wife. Mark 1: 30 mentions Peter’s mother-in-law. He didn’t have a mother-in-law without a wife. So we know Peter had a wife, but we know nothing else about her. Everyone knows Peter, but no one knows his wife. So many women serving outside their home culture feel that way. “Everyone knows my ‘Peter,’ but no one knows me.”

Because this newsletter goes to some ladies in sensitive areas, from time to time you will see the abbreviation PW used in the newsletter. Please remember that stands for those who serve as we serve. We want to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. (If you have further questions about this, please feel free to write to me personally and I will answer you in more detail.)

For the first eleven years of our marriage, my husband and I pioneered and pastored churches in Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Colorado. When we had the opportunity to begin cross cultural work, we moved to Benin City, Nigeria with our two sons (4 and 8 years old). After trying to home-school for two years, we felt it was important to our family that we find a place to serve where our sons could attend school. We moved to Southeast Asia where we have served since 1983.

Our mission statement is to bring health and healing to God’s people, families, churches, and leaders. Peter’s Wife is one of the ways I endeavor to reach that goal. These newsletters help and encourage women who, like me, serve outside their home culture.

   Hello, hello,
   Blessings on you for this great site of encouragement. My husband and I have been serving with OM for the past almost 6 years in Carlisle, England. I honestly had no idea how difficult it would to call ‘new dwelling’ home. Still struggle with it. I just finished reading the book Dwelling: Living Fully from the Space You Call Home by Mary Beth Lagerborg.
