We want to thank three PWs for sharing their experiences with long-distance grandmothering.
Home-side Grandmothering of PW Kids

I appreciate my mother and mother-in-law more each time we are back in the US. They are more important in the lives of my daughters than they would be if we lived a “normal” American life, and I think we all realize that. Because we live our lives in a cross-cultural setting, they make a big contribution by giving our children a kind of foundation in American culture, in a loving, wholesome way. Our lives are characterized by a high level of mobility, and yet Grandma’s house, Grandma’s hugs, Grandma’s cooking are a constant in our daughters’ memories.

Re-entry to our home country after years of living overseas is as important as arriving in our host country. Many of us think it will be very easy, “We are going home after all!” But it is seldom easy. The letters we received on this topic tell the personal stories of a few PWs and what helped them through the transition.

We asked in our last newsletter, “What is one thing that PWs should remember?” We had some wonderful answers. We hope you enjoy the wisdom that was shared.
About Yourself:

Let’s have some fun! Communication is challenging whether in marriage, with our children, with our co-workers, or with nationals. But sometimes improvement comes when we step back and look at it from a different angle.
My husband came up with the idea of using animals as pictures of human communication. Take a look at these and see if you can identify yourself or someone else you are trying to communicate with. Note that we sometimes act like different animals in different situations. Puppies can become clams if they are intimidated.
Have fun with the animals, and no fighting or self-condemnation, please. Continue reading 'Talking Like the Animals'»
In the country where we live, incense is burned everywhere, everyday. There is no way to avoid it. Those of us who live in places like this understand the powerful imagery of incense. Look at Second Corinthians, chapter two, verses 14-16. Paul says we are spreading the knowledge of our Lord like a sweet fragrance of incense. Where incense is burning, no one can ignore it. It either draws people toward its source, or repels them. The incense of our lives is spreading among those who are being saved and among those who are being lost.
In the first chapter of Malachi, verse 11 there is a promise that is particularly powerful for those of us who are living in other cultures. It says that from the rising to the setting of the sun, in every place, incense and pure offerings will be brought in His name. His name will be great among the nations. Every day it is happening. In some new place, a new life is offering up new praise to Him. You have a part to play in this drama of the ages. What joy to spread this fragrance! Continue reading 'The Fragrance of Incense'»
